The New Concentrator – Seamless Wireless Integration with Building Automation

Connecting wireless sensors to the building automation system’s central unit is now easier than ever: the new concentrator provides a reliable link for sensor data and enables real-time access, while being simple to deploy.
Read on to discover the exciting possibilities this technology offers for wireless data transmission!

The new gateway technology, developed in collaboration between Fidelix and Lansen, addresses the longstanding challenges related to wireless sensors collecting data for building automation in one go. The concentrator  simplifies the configuration of wireless sensors, delivers data directly from the sensors to the central unit without any cabling, and requires no separate monthly license fees. This technology significantly facilitates the monitoring and control of conditions in both new constructions and renovation projects.

What does the new Concentrator bring to wireless technology?

The new concentrator makes installation and integration of wireless sensors with the central unit significantly simpler than before. Instead of using Modbus technology, it utilises MBUS technology, which requires only the sensor’s serial number and encryption key for setup. This eliminates the traditionally challenging configuration process and greatly speeds up the installer’s work.

The concentrator combines the reliability of cabling with the convenience of wireless technology. Signal repeaters can be added between sensors and the central unit to extend the range. The reliability of the wireless connection is further enhanced by batteries with over 10 years of lifespan. The system also supports alerts for battery replacement and sensor removal.

The concentrator is a one-time investment, with no monthly fees for mobile networks or cloud services. Data travels securely over a local connection directly from the sensors to the central unit. The real-time nature and speed of this local data transfer also enable condition adjustments based on wireless sensor information.

This technology thus combines the robustness of wired connections with the flexibility and rapid installation benefits of wireless technology.

How does the technology work in real life?

The Concentrator uses the MBUS IP/UDP protocol to transmit messages sent by the sensors via an Ethernet cable to the building automation system’s central unit. The sensor sends measurement data every 2–3 minutes, minimising active time and battery consumption.

How far can the sensor be from the central unit?

The distance between the sensor and the central unit depends on the building and the density of its structures. Typically, the range is about 30–50 metres. The distance can be extended by adding wireless repeaters between the devices, which receive the signal and forward it further.

What does the concentrator require to operate?

The technology consists of wireless sensors, the concentrator, and, if needed, intermediate repeaters. The concentrator requires a power supply and an Ethernet cable connection to the building automation system’s central unit. The solution is optimised for Fidelix’s central unit but, thanks to its open technology, it also works with other systems.

Why switch to the new concentrator technology?

  • Ease of use: Setup is significantly simpler than with previous solutions.
  • Reliability: The local connection ensures real-time data transfer without mobile network delays.
  • Cost-effectiveness: No monthly fees, unlike mobile network-based solutions.
  • Security: The connection is encrypted and operates locally.
  • Connectivity: The system is easily expandable to meet future needs. It is possible to add reliable environmental sensors without cabling even afterwards.

By integrating Fidelix’s building automation system with Lansen’s wireless sensors, you can optimise energy consumption, enhance occupant comfort, and meet future requirements today. The easy interoperability of the systems delivers precise and reliable measurement data across all properties.
